Safety in the home - is your electric blanket safe?

Most of us tuck our electric blanket away in a cupboard during the summer, and don't think about it until the frosty nights return. But can you be sure that it will still be safe to use?

Together with Oxfordshire County Council's Trading Standards and Fire & Rescue services we offer a free electric blanket testing service during September and October.

The aim of testing is to take any dangerous blankets out of circulation. During the 2010 campaign out of 815 blankets tested, a huge 321 failed completely and were taken out of service because they were dangerous to use.

They have until 5pm on Thursday 20 October 2011 to apply for between £10,000 and £30,000 from the Big Lottery FundÂ’s Village SOS Active competition.

Anyone living in a rural village of less than 3,000 people, with an enterprising idea should register at where they will find more details as well as an online support network.

Extra support for those interested in applying is available via a telephone advice line -             0845 434 9123       - with experts giving practical tips on how to develop your ideas and make your village business a success.

Whatever they have in mind, whether it is a community pub or shop, broadband scheme or a local food or crafts project make sure to look on the Village SOS website for tools and tips to get started. Review of Cherwell Dial-a-Ride Service

Oxfordshire County Council and Cherwell District Council jointly fund the Cherwell Dial-a-Ride service, which provides door-to-door transport for disabled and mobility-impaired people throughout the Cherwell District and Wendlebury is served by the Bicester Rural Service which operates Tuesdays to Fridays. Details of the current service can be found in the dial-a-ride leaflet below.

The councils are currently reviewing the funding and operation of the service and it is likely that there will be significant changes to the scope of the service in the future.

The Parish Council has been asked to provide feedback on the current service and to this end your comments would be appreciated if:

  • You currently benefit from the service or know somebody who lives in Wendlebury who does.
  • You were unaware of the service but would now consider using it or suggesting it to someone else.

If so, please could you contact Lois Lancaster on             01869 252977       or so that your feedback can be including in the consultation.
